At Common Farms, we believe in building a future of equality and justice. Today is World Environment Day, and we want to highlight an environmental issue that needs more attention: food justice. Food plays such a significant role in shaping our ecosystem and our society!
"The Food Justice movement envisions a food system that is inclusive, community-led and participatory, without the exploitation of people, land, or the environment."
Food justice is racial and environmental justice. Minority communities are often disproportionately affected by issues of food insecurity and climate change. This is not just an issue that takes place far from home. Hong Kong certainly has its own struggles with equal opportunity for minorities and disadvantaged groups as well. At home and abroad, food distribution and agricultural production have big roles to play in shaping a more equitable future.
We still have a long way to go as a company before we’re able to achieve our long term goals of bringing food production back into the hands of local communities, and increasing access to nutritious, affordable fresh food for all. In order to make sure we’re heading in the right direction, we’re taking time to better educate ourselves on the issues of agricultural production that are intertwined with issues of socioeconomic and racial injustice.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will share more on our learning journey via our blog. We hope you'll follow along and become a more conscious participant in our food system.
